Punjab Tax Officers seal properties

Punjab government’s Excise and Tax Officers (ETOs) have gone on a property sealing drive following non-repayment of property tax. ETOs were assigned a target of 150 properties to seal daily so as to encourage tax compliance.

In the first 2 days of the drive, a total of 5300 properties were sealed across the province of defaulters owing the government some Rs. 160 million. Lahore alone accounted for 2100 of these properties for whom a total of Rs. 70 million was owed by defaulters to the government.

Over the first 12 days of the drive, 12,000 properties in Lahore were sealed for whom the defaulters owed some Rs. 860 million in overdue taxes. Similarly, in the first 12 days a total of 38,000 properties were sealed in Punjab for whom the defaulters owed Rs. 1.5 billion in overdue taxes.

The drive has already sparked some results. Some 300 properties were unsealed after defaulters made payments of around Rs. 10 million across Lahore in the first 2 days and some 3600 properties were unsealed in the first 12 days after payment of Rs. 110 million overdue taxes.

Some 1600 properties were unsealed across Punjab in total after payments worth Rs. 25 million were made by defaulters after the first 2 days and some 11,000 proeprties were unsealed in the first 12 days after recovery of Rs. 830 million in overdue taxes.

The Director General (DG) Excise has stated that the department aims to recover 80% of the outstanding taxes i.e. Rs. 28 billion by the end of March 2025.
