During a session of Senate’s Standing Committee on Finance, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials revealed that several prominent property developers and real estate businesses have begun moving their operations to Dubai. The FBR officials cited the challenging tax environment in Pakistan as the reason for this move.
Senator Faisal Vawda, who was a part of the proceedings suggested that a one-time amnesty scheme be offered to these businesses to return to Pakistan. However, FBR officials revealed that such a scheme is not possible because Pakistan is bound by agreements to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which monitors money laundering. Given that Pakistan is undergoing an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, it cannot go back on its commitments to international lenders and organizations.
