The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has begun disbursing compensation to Eden Housing scam’s victims.

Between 2008 and 2015, members of the Eden administration had launched multiple projects in Lahore and Faisalabad under various schemes such as Eden Residencia, Edenabad, Eden Gardens and Eden Villas. The administration collected massive funds in the name of these schemes, but despite the passage of time, failed to provide the investors with any files, plots and houses, partly because Eden administration did not own the land for these projects.

Public outcry led to NAB opening a reference against the Eden Housing administration in January 2019 which ultimately led to 11,888 victims being recorded as affectees of the scam. NAB filed a reference for Rs. 25 billion in damages against the administration against claims of Rs.13 billion filed by the victims. The Eden administration agreed to a plea bargain worth Rs.16 billion.

NAB has recovered Rs. 11.8 billion so far. Out of this Rs 8.6 billion has already been distributed to the victims in 4 installments and the remaining is now being distributed as a fifth installment of Rs. 3.2 billion. NAB is still working to recover the remaining Rs. 4.2 billion from the Eden administration.

In a bid to facilitate the victims, NAB also announced that the compensation funds will now be deposited into the victims’ accounts directly, instead of through visits to NAB offices, through a newly introduced digital system.
