Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a drive to clear out illegal occupants from its flats in Islamabad’s Aabpara sector in G-6 after years of court cases and possession issues.
These flats, which comprise 200 residential units, were originally built by CDA in 2003 near Aabpara market as housing to be allotted to government employees. However, an agreement with the housing ministry couldn’t be finalized leading to these flats remaining unoccupied.
The flats were used to house refugees when the 2005 earthquake struck the country and were used by police units for accommodation during the Lal Masjid operation in 2007. Afterwards, several government employees and police personnel continued to stay in the flats.
CDA officials note that currently, a mixture of police, government and CDA employees alongside private residents live in the flats. Many of these residents occupy the flats illegally. The flats themselves remain in poor condition with many infrastructural issues. CDA officials have claimed that they will decide residents’ cases strictly according to the law during the eviction drive.
