FBR begins seizing Benami properties

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) seized its first Benaami property under its Anti-Benaami Initiaitive (ABI) under the Benaami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 2017. The property transfer occurred after an investigation of the properties in question and once the appropriate legal procedures and verifications had been carried out.

Benaami properties are properties that are registered under the name of unsuspecting citizens who do not have any knowledge of these properties. This is typically done to hide black money by giving it pseudo-legal status. The real estate sector is one such avenue that is used for such purposes.

FBR received a complaint about these properties which it investigated by contacting the individual listed as owner of these properties. Upon verification that the individual had no idea about these properties, FBR proceeded to file a reference with the Benami Adjudicating Authority Bench-I Islamabad, one of 3 such benches in the country.

The reference was decided in favor of FBR, after which it proceeded to seize these properties through local law enforcement. Currently, 187 references have been filed before the 3 benches that are pending.

The plots seized by FBR are:

Plot No. 168-A (Corner), Block H, Pakistan Employees Cooperative Housing society (PECHS), Islamabad. (Area: 816 sq. yards)

Plot No. 174-A (Corner), Block H, Pakistan Employees Cooperative Housing society (PECHS), Islamabad. (Area: 991 sq. yards)
